I believe it is because there are more distractions now than there were before. Books,
notes, and pens were the only items kids brought to school back in the day.
Some of them now have tablets or cell phones.
They can perform a hundred different things with those devices.
If they have an internet connection, the number of directions will multiply exponentially. They can,
for example, play games while conversing with friends or browse the web while viewing YouTube videos.
