I am very opinionated.
Most of my ideas can be considered controversial and polarizing.
I am also very stubborn, and it will take a lot of intellectual
prodding to convince me to change my mind.
I think that is why there are people who, despite my eccentricities, still come to me and ask for my opinion on things.
One happened just a few weeks ago. My daughter's friend, who is only 20 years old,
wanted to know what I thought about marriage.
Her boyfriend of one year asked for her hand in marriage,
and she said yes. Her parents weren't happy with her decision because they believed she was too young to settle down.
She came to me hoping I could persuade her parents to agree with her decision.
Unfortunately, I belong to the same generation as her parents, and
I told her I thought they were right.
I said that, ultimately, this was her life, and under the law, she was old enough to make this decision.
However, I explained that she was giving up a lot by tying the knot.
I said it wasn't wrong to want to be with the man she loves, but if that love they had were real,
then waiting a few more years would not have mattered.
I explained that life is already complicated enough, and combining two lives into one adds more complications. Marriage is supposed to be for life.
They don't say a death
do us part in the vows for kicks.
I told her that I wasn't in a position to dictate what she does with her life, but I did advise her to think things through as thoroughly as she could.
I think she is still going through with the wedding.
I don't regret telling her my thoughts about her plans.
She needed to hear that from someone other than her mom and dad, and she'd know
they weren't just saying that because they were her parents.
