I think it is because they are avoiding scrutiny.
When people reveal their thoughts, they open themselves to other people's judgments and questions, and some are not ready to discuss their beliefs or defend them.
They hate confrontations. For example, anything related to religion or politics is taboo in some parts of society because people have strong opinions about these matters, and some would go as far as insist them on others.
In most cases, what began as a friendly chat would turn into a spat or violent debate.
On the other hand, some love telling people what they think about things and don't care for its repercussions.
