I break out in a big grin
every time I remember our holiday trip to Japan.
We had to walk for almost three hours to find our way back to our small lodgings in Saitama, using my phone as a guide.
It happened in mid-2015, maybe a month after our university graduation.
My two best friends, Jiyoon and Jin, decided to join me in Japan for a much-deserved vacation.
We decided to stay in a cheap hostel instead of a hotel
so we could spend more money on food and shopping.
We visited Akihabara to join a cosplay event, but we enjoyed ourselves so much that we lost track of time.
We rushed to the station, but there were no more trains,
and we
weren't able to find a taxi.
So, we decided to walk.
The problem was, we didn't know the area,
so we had to rely on Google Maps. Jin and Jiyoon's phones were already dead because they took so many photos earlier. Without my mobile phone,
we could have gotten into worse trouble.
It was our only lifeline.
Anyway, it was one of the most tiring and nerve-wracking moments of my life.
Nobody among the three of us
spoke any Japanese, and to make matters worse,
my battery ran out while we were walking. We had to stop at 24-hour convenience stores to charge the phone a few times.
Just imagine our relief when we finally arrived at the hostel past 3 a.m.
The front-desk manager was surprised, and our feet were
aching from all the walking we did. I'm going to make sure it doesn't happen again.
