Even though I can't hold my alcohol
so well, still I am very proud to say Soju is the most distinguishable product in our country.
Soju, a traditional Korean drink, has been high up on most foreigners’ souvenir lists. If my memory serves me right, I first tried it when my father gave it to me when I was fifteen.
This was the time he felt
I was ready to handle alcohol.
We were having a family barbecue party outside of my grandmother's home in the countryside.
I jokingly asked for a sip,
instead
he handed me the entire bottle with a shot glass.
He said it was my time and he'd feel better if he could keep an eye on me if I got a bit tipsy rather than letting me get cranked up outside with random strangers.
As far as I know, Soju is originally made from wheat, rice or barley and it is usually consumed neat. Ever since K pop culture boomed, many
Soju companies have come out with a variety of flavored options, such as citrus, peach, grape,
grapefruit, and blueberry. Blueberries are the best. Honestly, when I travel to different countries before the pandemic,
I felt so proud to see
Soju in the chillers, or product stands in 7/11 or supermarkets.
I was even fascinated to see how foreigners can handle such a hard drink.
They seem to like it more than me.
They looked like they were gulping small amounts of water without making a face.
If you haven't tried one,
I encourage you to grab one later on.
