I believe that one of the most important scientific achievements of humankind is the creation of vaccines. Children,
and yes, even some adults, are afraid of the needle,
but a quick second of pain is better than years and years of illness or even worse, an early death. A vaccine introduces a weakened version of the disease into the body, and stimulates the immune system so that the body can fight on its own.
It has saved millions of lives all over the world.
Some of the diseases that scientists have made vaccines for our polio, flu, mumps, measles, rabies, hepatitis and bacterial infections. Before vaccines were invented,
these diseases were considered life-threatening
but today they have almost disappeared
except in the most remote locations.
Everyone is affected by this.
Young people can avoid diseases that can potentially cause permanent disability or a life of pain.
Older people can think vaccines for their increased life expectancies and short recovery periods from viral illnesses. Obviously, vaccines are as important as ever during this global covid-19 pandemic.
Like immunization has been a focal activity for governments across the globe,
and in some countries people cannot enter establishments without a vaccination card.
This has caused some resentment and protests but overall, vaccines are a godsend. Without them, a far higher
percentage of people would be suffering from a host of diseases and would live their lives trying to get well instead of achieving their dreams and having fun along the way.
