I think it really depends. In my observation,
people living in rural areas or small villages usually live together a a close-knit community which means that everyone knows everybody.
They are not only acquainted with each other but they know each of them like the back of their hands. On the contrary, those who reside in big cities are the total opposite and we can't blame them for that.
It's common for city dwellers to be aware of who their next door neighbors

because each of them has such an extremely hectic schedule that they no longer have time to mind others down and, more importantly, to get to know them.
