My mother used to tell me bedtime stories when I was a child and I will never forget the time when she told me a fable about The Hare and The Tortoise. As a child,
I loved to read but I loved listening to stories more.
My dad would usually read something out of a children's encyclopedia
and my mom
would usually tell me a story about a fairy tale or a fable. That night,
she chose to tell me a fable about The Hare and The Tortoise. In the story,
the tortoise, tired of constantly being ridiculed for being slow by the hare,
challenged it to a race. The hare, confident as he knew he was faster, sped up
but took a nap midway through, knowing that the tortoise was far behind. When he woke up,
he found the tortoise very near to the finish line. Even when
he ran as fast as he could,
he was too late as the tortoise had arrived and the finish before him.
As a young child, this story stuck into my head as it emphasized that everyone can have a chance to finish no matter how difficult the task as with the tortoise, and overconfidence can sometimes be the cause of your ruin as with the hare.
My mother used to tell me not to rush and lose interest or rush and do things half-heartedly. Be more like the tortoise,
steadily working for a goal, being patient, and achieving success in the end. As the saying goes, "slow and steady wins the race".
