My answer is not a legal rule, but it seems to be common place here in South Korea.
It's the fact that napping during class seems to be the norm.
I've read that in many Korean classrooms,
it is acceptable to have even half the class sleeping.
I think many of my countrymen don't see any harm in it.
They believe that students should nap when they're tired because they can't pay attention anyway.
However, this unspoken rule might be a symptom of a deep ailment. After much consideration,
I believe this should change because it raises several important questions.
Why are they sleeping in the first place, or why didn't they get enough sleep? How does it make teachers feel, and how does it affect their performance? Isn't it a big waste of time if students are physically
present,
but their minds are in dreamland?
Clearly, our society's penchant for after school studying,
weekend classes and very short or non-existent vacations have taken their toll on our youth.
Honestly,
I did this myself many times when I was still in high school, but now I realized that it's not a beneficial practice. Just because society has gotten used to doing something in a certain way,
it doesn't mean that it cannot change for the better.
Norms and protocols exist for a reason, but we must be ready to rock the boat
if it means progress. Out with the old and in with the new!
