I think being friendly is just showing a desire to be around others,
while being polite is trying to display what society considers as the norm. Being friendly is also where an individual opens more of himself to others while a polite person considers and respects the people around him.
Finally, people who are friendly are generally easy to approach, whereas those who are polite are often respected by others because they are well-mannered.
