I only know how to swim well enough to save my life in an emergency.
I can still remember how many times I almost drowned in the process of learning how to swim.
I admit I learned how to swim quite late.
It was in college as swimming was an essential physical education subject.
I had to get a passing score that semester as it was
my only remaining P.E. subject.
I remember that I was the only Junior in the whole class. Later
I was told that it was a block section for freshman Marine Biology students as part of their open water diving license
course. I was the only one in the class who did not know how to swim. Poor me! On the first day,
I could not even float.
I had to feign an injury so I could be excused for the following weeks as I was too terrified and embarrassed to come back to class.
Unfortunately,
my professor said a deadline to check if we had learned the different swimming strokes.
I was doomed! But I did not give up.
I recruited my best friend and my boyfriend at the time to teach me.
They were both divers
so I thought they could teach me well. Big mistake. In our first session,
they pushed me off the deep end of the pool. Instinct set in
and I clumsily paddled my way to safety.
They cheered me on and said, "you're a natural!" RIght. For the next four weeks,
I cried so much and drank a lot of pool water while I practiced as I barely learned how to swim freestyle and breaststroke.
I cannot for the life of me do the butterfly stroke.
My friends laughingly said it looked more like the caterpillar stroke, whatever that was.
I was relieved
that at least I know the basics of swimming.
I barely passed the test.
I think most of my points were because the teacher saw my effort and also because he pitied me.
Now, when we have a family outing at the beach or pool, I still don't enjoy swimming but if some wage
crazy "accidentally" pushes me into the water,
I can confidently swim to save my life.
