In one of my art classes in my primary school, we were tasked to paint how we perceived strength.
The first thing that came to my mind was the image of Jesus Christ's arms wide open.
At first, I used oil pastel with the outline of his body and face.
However, as I was nearing half of it, it didn't look right and not what I imagined. Thus, I hurriedly took a new 50 x 70 canvas and used the remaining watercolor I had from the last activity.
I was relieved to make that last minute change.
I painted his face to how I thought of him, not the ones from the Greek or Roman representations. In my work,
he was wearing a long garment covering his arms and feet that was as white as snow.
Also, he had his arms extended widely, as if ready to give a warm embrace. Of course, the background was the sun shining at a forty-five-degree angle.
I have to admit that I felt so refreshed after finishing my work because seeing his image gave me solace in the most trying time of my life.
Because, at that time, I was so lost and depressed.
Thus, this was the kind of strength
I needed to regain my faith as a devoted
Christian. Most importantly, seeing how my art teacher was so impressed by it was an unforgettable feeling. I believe that it was more of a therapy for me rather than just a mere school activity.
