I remember attending a reunion with my high school friends a couple of years ago.
This happened a month or two before Covid-19 caused places to lock down. The group decided to meet because it has been over a decade since we graduated and saw each other.
We met for dinner in a fancy restaurant in the Gangnam district.
Right after we sat down at our table, we all put our phones in silent mode and I collected them.
No one was allowed to use their devices until after the meal.
We agreed to do this beforehand
so no one complained. It was a suggestion from Tae-hyun the leader of our class
in high school. Korea is a digital society and it is not unknown for people to use their tablets or smartphones during dates or conversations.
We wanted to connect on a deeper level instead of the usual shallow exchanges
we have online.

At first, I felt like I was missing a limb and I wanted to check my phone.
I also missed taking photos of my food to post on my Instagram. But as the night progressed, the conversation became more enjoyable and I was able to appreciate the food. In the end, I realized the extent of my smartphone addiction, and the phoneless reunion helped me become less reliant on cell phones. Today,
I don't give in to the need to check my device constantly and I've implemented privacy practices such as turning off notifications and using a virtual private network.
