For me, there are two main reasons for this and the first one is motivation people especially students will do a better job if they have a goal to strive for and if they know that their efforts will be rewarded human beings are naturally competitive and they will quickly lose steam if nobody notices their work.
The second reason is that it benefits the organization excellent outputs by students or workers are good for the image of the company which means more business and more prestige.
